SellCell recently conducted a survey of 2,000 iPhone owners to gauge their interest in the upcoming iPhone 17 series. The results revealed that 68.3% of respondents plan to upgrade to one of the new models during the launch. This marks a 10.3% increase from last year's survey, indicating a higher level of anticipation among iPhone users.
Key Factors Driving iPhone 17 Upgrade Decisions
Among those planning to upgrade, 38.1% are eyeing the iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max, while 16.7% are interested in the standard iPhone 17 model. The sleek iPhone 17 Air has also caught the attention of 13.5% of participants. Despite some users feeling that Apple has "lost its edge," the majority (72.9%) expressed high satisfaction with their current iPhones, leading to the decision to upgrade.

When asked about the main barriers to purchasing a new iPhone 17 model, 68.9% of respondents cited the high price point. Additionally, 16% felt that Apple's lack of innovation was a concern, while 5% were considering a switch to Android. However, a significant percentage of users expressed interest in new design elements, larger batteries, major camera upgrades, and AI features as driving factors for their upgrade decisions.
Competition from Foldable Phones Poses a Threat
While the majority of iPhone users remain loyal to Apple, a noteworthy 30% are considering a switch to Samsung or Pixel foldable phones. Should Apple delay the release of a foldable iPhone until next year, 20.1% expressed willingness to switch to a Galaxy foldable model, with an additional 10.2% considering a Pixel option. This potential shift highlights the importance of innovation and timely product launches in retaining customers.
Despite some concerns about tariffs impacting iPhone pricing, a significant portion of users (34%) are still willing to invest in a new iPhone. The survey also revealed that Android's appeal is growing among users due to factors such as AI integration, competitive pricing, camera quality, and the emergence of foldable devices.
