Google has implemented new requirements for app developers distributing apps outside the Play Store, emphasizing the significance of verifying their identity.
Starting September 2026, developers will need to complete Google's developer verification process to continue distributing apps. An early access program will be available to developers in October, with a wider rollout scheduled for March 2026 before the requirements take effect.
Developers publishing apps outside the Play Store will utilize a new Android Developer Console to verify their identity.
Google's aim with these new requirements is to enhance developer accountability and improve user protection against fraud and malware. Android devices preinstalled with Android Services, the Play Store, and Play Services will have the ability to block apps from unverified developers.
