Google Photos is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to easily identify whether a photo or video has been created or edited using AI tools. The feature, known as "threepio," will be added to the photo details view and will provide information on how the image was made or altered. This feature is expected to help users distinguish between real images and deepfakes, providing more transparency and authenticity to visual content.
The feature will include labels such as "Media created with AI," "Edited with AI tools," "Edited with multiple AI tools," "Edited with non-AI tools," and "Media captured with a camera without software adjustments." It will also detect when multiple editing tools were used or when images were combined. In cases where the file's edit history is missing or has been altered, Google Photos will display an error message.
This functionality is believed to be powered by Content Credentials, a system that attaches a persistent history of edits to a file. The goal is to provide users with more context about the origins of visual content, enhancing transparency and trust in the images and videos they view.
