AT&T and T-Mobile have reached a settlement with Headwater Research, resolving patent infringement lawsuits that were set to go to trial. The lawsuits alleged that both carriers were infringing on wireless communication patents related to data usage reduction and network congestion easing technologies.
Similar to a previous case involving Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile chose to settle to avoid the risk of facing multi-million dollar damages. The terms of the settlements have not been disclosed, and both companies have requested a pause in legal proceedings.
Headwater Research had accused T-Mobile and AT&T of infringing on patents related to wireless communication technologies that improve network speed and device functionality. By settling out of court, both carriers avoided the potential for significant financial penalties.
