Interview with Design Milk
In a recent interview with Design Milk, Adam Bates, Head of Design at Nothing, provided insights into the design changes of the new Nothing Phone (3). The company has introduced a new system known as the Glyph Matrix, replacing the previous Glyph Interface.
The Glyph Matrix, located in the top right corner of the phone, is a cluster of micro-LEDs capable of displaying symbols, custom animations, and reactive lighting. Bates highlighted that the new matrix offers pixel-level responsiveness and enables true personalization.
Unlike traditional segmented light strips, the Glyph Matrix provides a dynamic and evolving visual system that allows for movement, pattern formation, and fluid animations, giving the phone a unique personality. Users can now connect with their device in a new way through symbols, abstract visuals, and dynamic feedback.
While retaining the philosophy of minimal distraction and meaningful interactions, Nothing has expanded the scope of design, turning the back of the phone into an expressive and functional surface.
Adam Bates expressed his excitement about the redesigned look of the Nothing Phone (3), stating that it brings back a techy and fun aesthetic that sets it apart from other smartphones.
