New Energy Efficiency Labels: What You Need to Know Before Purchasing a Smartphone in the EU

Source: Date:

As of today, a new regulation in the EU mandates that all new smartphones and tablets sold in the region must come with an energy efficiency label inside their packaging. This initiative aims to empower consumers with information to make environmentally conscious purchasing decisions and reduce CO₂ emissions. The label, known as the ENERGY sticker, provides key information such as overall energy efficiency rating, battery endurance, reliability class, repairability, and more. Manufacturers are required to register their products with the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) managed by the European Commission. Additionally, devices must meet eco-design criteria including durability, battery longevity, repairability, software support, and repair access. It's important to note that these regulations do not apply to devices released prior to June 20 or certain specialized devices. Stay informed and make eco-friendly choices when buying your next smartphone.
