Apple Introduces New AI Features in iOS 26

At WWDC 2025, Apple unveiled the latest version of its operating system, iOS 26, showcasing a range of new AI features. Some of these features may seem familiar to those who have followed the developments in Google's Pixel phones and Gemini technology. This has raised questions about whether Apple has drawn inspiration from Google's innovations. Let's explore some of the key similarities below.
  • Live Voicemail — Google Pixel’s “Call Screening”
When receiving a call from an unknown number, Apple's AI assistant can answer on your behalf and transcribe the caller's purpose in real time. This feature bears resemblance to Google Pixel's "Call Screening" introduced in 2018 with Pixel 3.
  • Personal Voice Assistant on Calls — Pixel’s “Hold for Me”
Apple's AI can now recognize when a support call is put on hold and notify you when a human agent picks up. Similar to Pixel's "Hold for Me" function introduced with Pixel 5 in 2020.
  • Visual Look Up — Apple's take on "Circle to Search"
By snapping a screenshot, users can perform an image search by tapping on objects. This feature, reminiscent of Samsung and Google's "Circle to Search," was first seen on Galaxy S24 and Pixel 8 phones in early 2024.
  • Live Translation — Apple's version of "Live Translate"
iOS 26 now offers live translation during calls, a feature initially seen on Galaxy S24 Ultra and Pixel 9 phones. While still a bit rough around the edges, it will be interesting to see how Apple refines this technology.
In light of these similarities, some may view Apple's AI features as a nod to the success of Google's innovations. Despite the resemblances, Apple's approach to privacy and ecosystem integration sets it apart from Android devices. It remains to be seen how users will respond to these new AI capabilities in iOS 26.
