A recently filed patent by Apple reveals a potential game-changing upgrade in autofocus technology for upcoming iPhone models. The patent suggests a shift from the conventional single infrared dot projector to a cutting-edge system utilizing two invisible laser beams. This twin-laser approach aims to enhance focus speed and accuracy, particularly in dynamic settings where subjects or users are in motion.
The patent, identified as US 12335613 B2, elaborates on the functionality of the twin-laser system. When a user lifts their iPhone to capture an image, each laser emits a pulse of light at slightly different angles. By measuring the reflections' return time, tiny sensors determine the distance based on the agreement between the two beams. If the beams differ, the system seamlessly transitions to traditional autofocus before reattempting the focus lock.
