Meta has announced that ads will soon be appearing in the Updates tab on WhatsApp. This new feature will include ads in Status and Promoted Channels, allowing users to discover new businesses and channels while scrolling through their updates.
In addition to ads, WhatsApp will also be introducing Channel subscriptions, where users can pay a monthly fee to receive exclusive updates from channels. This new feature aims to enhance the user experience without disrupting personal chats.
Despite the introduction of ads, users can rest assured that their personal messages, calls, and statuses will remain end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp will use specific information, such as location and language, to personalize ads in Status and Promoted Channels. However, user phone numbers will not be shared with advertisers, and personal messages will not influence the ads displayed.
This new update will be rolled out slowly over the next few months, ensuring a seamless transition for users.
