Samsung ordered to pay $117M for patent infringement

A U.S. District Court in Texas ruled against Samsung in a patent infringement case, ordering the tech giant to pay $117.7 million in damages to Maxell. The lawsuit, filed in September 2023, alleged that Samsung violated seven of Maxell's patents related to smartphone and tablet unlocking technology, data management, and smart home platforms.

Maxell claimed that Samsung continued to use its patented technology after the expiration of a 10-year licensing agreement in 2021. Despite the initial agreement, Samsung failed to renegotiate its license with Maxell, leading to the legal battle that resulted in the recent court decision.

Although Samsung has the option to appeal the ruling, the outcome of this case underscores the importance of respecting intellectual property rights in the tech industry.
