Latest rumor: Apple's upcoming macOS update may leave certain Macs behind

Source: Date:

Rumors are circulating about the next macOS update from Apple, which is speculated to be macOS 26. It is believed that this update may no longer support certain older Intel-based Mac models that currently run macOS Sequoia. According to sources cited by AppleInsider, the following Macs and MacBooks may not be compatible with the new macOS version:

  • MacBook Pro (2018)
  • iMac (2019)
  • iMac Pro (2017)
  • Mac mini (2018)
  • MacBook Air (2020, Intel-based)

If these rumors hold true, it means that only newer models such as the MacBook Pro (2019 and later), iMac (2020 and later), Mac Pro (2019 and later), Mac mini (M1 and later), Mac Studio (all models), and MacBook Air (M1 and later) will be compatible with macOS 26. This update is also expected to introduce design changes inspired by visionOS, with a shift to naming software platforms after the year.

Apple's WWDC 2025 is just around the corner, scheduled to start on June 9 with a keynote address. The unveiling of macOS 26, along with iOS 26 and other software updates, is anticipated during this conference. The first developer beta of macOS 26 is likely to be released right after the keynote, with the stable public version set for launch in the fall.
