Signal, a well-known secure messaging application, is taking a definitive stand against Microsoft’s Windows Recall feature, which operates by taking screenshots of the user’s screen at regular intervals. These snapshots are processed by AI to help users retrieve previously viewed content. However, Signal’s latest update effectively disables this feature within its desktop app, citing the necessity of enhanced security measures for users on the Windows 11 platform.
This security enhancement, as detailed in Signal’s blog post from May 2025, aims to uphold user confidentiality despite introducing certain usability limitations. Microsoft’s inability to provide more secure alternatives has left Signal with no other choice.
Nevertheless, the implementation of this screen security feature is not without drawbacks. Users relying on accessibility software, such as screen readers and magnification tools, might find their functionality interrupted. It is important to note that while this feature provides protection on the primary device, it doesn’t stop screen captures on other devices. Users who prefer to manage this setting can disable the screen security feature by navigating to Signal Settings, then to Privacy, and finally to Screen Security.
