T-Mobile Reduces Eligible Devices for Starlink Beta, Leaving Some Users Disappointed

Source: Date:

The collaboration between T-Mobile and SpaceX's Starlink has opened doors to satellite-based cell services, especially for those in remote areas. However, recent changes have left some users in the lurch as the list of compatible devices has been reduced, creating confusion and disappointment among customers eager to utilize this innovative technology.

T-Mobile users recently discovered that several devices, including popular models like the Samsung Galaxy S23, are no longer supported for the Starlink beta service. One user shared their experience when they tried to connect their Galaxy S23 to the service, only to find it lacking support just as they were planning a trip.

According to T-Mobile customer support, these changes took effect on May 17, just a week prior to this discovery. While no official explanation was provided, it’s speculated that the reduction may be to manage system load, particularly as the service prioritizes first responders.

Fortunately, the user managed to obtain the updated list of devices eligible for the Starlink beta. The situation has been mixed, with some users praising the service while others express dissatisfaction with its performance. Interestingly, the iPhone 13 only recently became eligible after receiving iOS 18.5, but it was notably absent from the latest list, raising questions about the device's ongoing compatibility.

With major competitors like AT&T and Verizon also entering the satellite service arena, the battle for dominance in this emerging market is heating up. While T-Mobile’s offering has yet to gain significant attention, both AT&T and Verizon expect their services to launch fully by next year. As the industry evolves, it remains to be seen how T-Mobile will fare against its rivals.

We have reached out to T-Mobile for further comment and will update this article once we receive a response.
