WhatsApp is enhancing its messaging experience with the introduction of an innovative translation feature for chat messages and channel updates. This new function, currently available to select Android users in the beta testing program, aims to break language barriers and foster easier communication among users.
As reported by WABetaInfo, the translation feature is accessible for beta users operating on version 2.25.12.25 of WhatsApp for Android. The company plans to broaden this rollout to more beta users in the upcoming weeks.
This feature supports translations for several languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Hindi, and Russian. Notably, all translations are performed on-device, eliminating the need for an active internet connection. To utilize this feature, users must download specific language packs corresponding to the languages they wish to translate. Alternatively, they can opt for a universal language pack that automatically detects the incoming message's language for seamless translation.
The translation toggle can be easily activated in the chat info screen, allowing users to select the desired language for automatic translation on a per-chat basis, whether in private conversations or group chats. For users who prefer manual translation, this can also be done by selecting the message and tapping on "Translate."
However, it’s important to note that WhatsApp's translation feature may not achieve the same level of accuracy as cloud-based translation services. Since the translations are conducted using lightweight language packs on-device, WhatsApp encourages users to provide feedback on translation quality without passing along original or translated messages to Meta for privacy reasons.
If you are part of the WhatsApp for Android beta program and have access to this new translation feature, we invite you to share your experiences with us.
