With President Donald Trump exempting iPhones from tariffs, prospective buyers can remain hopeful about affording the iPhone 17 series, expected to be unveiled this September. Rumors surrounding a contentious design revision seem to have credibility, particularly with the most recent image offering a glimpse of the iPhone 17 Pro Max's rear.
Both the iPhone 17 Air (speculated to be a thinner model) and the Pro versions are set to feature a horizontal camera island, a change that may not have been influenced by the Google Pixel lineup. An image shared by X user @LusiRoy8 appears to display the case for the rumored iPhone 17 Pro Max, mounted on what looks like a dummy unit.
As observed, the camera alignment remains in a triangular layout; however, the camera island extends across the entire width of the phone, creating a notably larger camera bump. Case manufacturers have already begun producing and testing accessories for these new devices. The leaked clear case for the iPhone 17 Pro Max shows a considerably larger cutout than that of the iPhone 16 Pro Max case, designed to accommodate the increased dimensions of the camera island.
Additionally, some variations of the iPhone 17 Pro cases might incorporate two distinct cutouts—one designated for the cameras and another for the LiDAR scanner, LED flash, and microphone, which have reportedly moved toward the phone's edge.
While some may view this design as controversial, it may be a refreshing change for fans tired of the previous aesthetics. Reports suggest that Apple had to rethink the layout due to the new 48MP telephoto camera’s increased size, leaving insufficient room for the LiDAR scanner, LED flash, and microphone in their old positions.
The upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models are rumored to feature cutting-edge 3nm chip technology, though conflicting reports suggest an even more advanced 2nm process may be used for improved performance and efficiency. Additionally, these Pro variants are potentially moving from a titanium frame to aluminum sides, and the entire series is expected to run on iOS 19.
