Enhanced Security: Android 16 Brings Identity Check to More Devices

Source: Date:

In a significant move towards enhancing smartphone security, Android 16 is set to expand the reach of the Identity Check feature to a broader range of Android devices. Originally designed for Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy smartphones, this powerful anti-theft measure introduces an additional layer of protection for users against unauthorized access. Let's explore what Identity Check entails and how it will benefit a new wave of Android users.

Initially rolled out with the December 2024 Pixel Drop, Identity Check soon became accessible on Samsung devices through the One UI 7 update. It is part of Google's comprehensive Theft Protection suite, which requires biometric verification (like a fingerprint or facial recognition) for critical actions, such as changing passwords or accessing saved login details.

With the anticipated release of Android 16 in May 2025, the Identity Check feature is making its way to non-Pixel devices like the OnePlus 13, which is already running the Android 16 beta. This promises that other manufacturers, including Xiaomi, are gearing up to integrate Identity Check into their Android 16-based updates later in the year.

If your device supports Android 16 and is equipped with a Class 3 biometric sensor (a standard feature in many modern mid-range and flagship Android phones), you will likely be able to activate Identity Check after the update. However, it will not be enabled by default, so users need to manually turn it on by navigating to Settings > Google > Theft Protection.

While Identity Check offers robust protection, it is essential to remember that it is not infallible. This feature ensures that even with knowledge of your PIN, password, or pattern, unauthorized users cannot access sensitive information without passing a biometric scan.
