T-Mobile's Satellite Service Faces Uncertainty Over Regulatory Hurdles

Source: Date:

T-Mobile's satellite program, which relies on SpaceX's Starlink satellites, is currently limited to texting only. Plans for data and call capabilities are in the pipeline, but regulatory challenges may hinder their progress.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) initially approved T-Mobile and SpaceX's direct-to-cell service, despite objections from competitors like AT&T and Verizon. A waiver on emission limits was granted, allowing for higher power operation and potential additional features like 911 emergency calling.

However, T-Mobile has requested a review of the FCC's decision, citing lack of technical evidence from SpaceX and claiming that the waiver was granted to promote satellite deployment rather than based on engineering analyses. If the waiver is revoked, T-Mobile's satellite calling capabilities could be at risk.

With potential opposition from other companies, the future of T-Mobile and SpaceX's satellite service enhancements remains uncertain.
