Apple and Elon Musk are now in a fierce competition not just on Earth, but in space as well. The latest standoff between Apple and SpaceX involves efforts to improve connectivity in areas with poor cellular network coverage. T-Mobile is set to launch its own satellite texting service this summer, which will also be compatible with newer iPhone models. However, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, it was a challenging journey to reach this point and for Apple to collaborate with T-Mobile.

Apple and Musk: friends, rivals, and everything in between

The relationship between Apple and SpaceX is complex. Apple tightly controls the features on iPhones, making it essential for external services—such as Starlink—to receive Apple's approval to function seamlessly. This led to intense negotiations between the companies, with Apple eventually agreeing to integrate the Starlink/T-Mobile service into iPhones.

Why this matters now

Both companies are in a race to bridge the gaps in traditional cellular network coverage. The current satellite features in iPhones have already been credited with saving lives during emergencies, but Apple aims to expand further. On the other hand, Starlink's direct-to-device service offers constant messaging from virtually anywhere, which could revolutionize connectivity for travelers, hikers, and individuals in remote locations.

Apple reportedly explored partnerships with other satellite providers like EchoStar and Boeing, in case Globalstar faced challenges. While these partnerships have not yet materialized, it demonstrates Apple's determination to establish a strong presence in this space.

The outcome of this competition could determine whether Apple retains control over connectivity or relies more on services like Starlink—placing some power in Musk's hands. The collaboration and rivalry between Apple and SpaceX are crucial in shaping the future of connectivity for users across the globe.
