Ocean City City Council Set to Vote on Verizon's New Cell Tower Proposal
In a significant development for residents and visitors of Ocean City, New Jersey, the City Council is preparing to cast a pivotal vote on a new cell tower proposal from Verizon. If approved, this infrastructure will enhance wireless coverage on the island, improving connectivity for both mobile and business services. The public will have the opportunity to voice their opinions during the upcoming meeting on April 10th.
Verizon has found a potential solution for expanding its network in Ocean City after previously encountering obstacles. After suing the city in 2023 due to the denial of an equipment installation request on the roof of a private building, the dispute was amicably settled. Last Thursday, the City Council passed a resolution that approved the terms of this settlement, which Verizon claimed violated federal telecommunication laws.
Alongside this resolution, the City Council introduced an ordinance permitting Verizon to construct a new 120-foot cell tower on city-owned land located on Bay Avenue. This new installation aims to bridge a current "significant gap" in wireless coverage, as highlighted by Verizon.
If the ordinance receives the green light during the April 10th vote, it will mark a critical step in ensuring that Verizon customers on the island will benefit from improved connectivity. The previous plan submitted by Verizon in September 2020 proposed equipment additions to a rooftop, but this was ultimately revised to allow for the construction of the new cell tower, following the settlement agreement.
Verizon continues to provide a wide range of services in Ocean City, including mobile, internet, phone, and TV services, with nearly 69% of the island currently enjoying access to its 5G Home Internet offerings. This expansion not only enhances service quality for customers but also positions Verizon competitively against other providers like T-Mobile.
As anticipation grows for the City Council's decision, residents are encouraged to stay informed and engaged in the process regarding the new cell tower. The upcoming meeting presents a vital opportunity for community members to express their views on the proposal.
