iPhone 18 Pro Series Expected to Feature Second-Generation Apple Modem
As the anticipation builds for Apple's next flagship smartphones, rumors are swirling regarding the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series. The new models are expected to showcase an advanced version of Apple's in-house cellular modem, marking a significant step forward in the company's efforts to rely less on external suppliers.
The iPhone 16e has already made headlines as the first device to incorporate Apple's own cellular modem, known as the C1. This initial iteration serves as a testing ground for Cupertino, employing a combination of 4-7nm baseband components and a 55nm Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC), yet it notably does not support mmWave technology. For the time being, the iPhone 17 Pro series will not feature the C1 modem, with Qualcomm continuing to supply the modems instead.
According to a recent report from industry insider Pu, the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are set to launch with Apple's newer C2 modem, offering enhanced performance and capabilities. However, it's uncertain whether the standard iPhone 18 will utilize the new modem or revert back to the Qualcomm model, or even continue using the existing C1 chip.
Interestingly, while the current C1 modem remains an external solution, future iterations are expected to be integrated into Apple's A-series chipsets. However, sources indicate that this integration may not occur in the immediate future.
