Google Phases Out Assistant Features as Transition to Gemini Unfolds

As Google gears up for the transition to its new AI assistant, Gemini, the tech giant is systematically retiring several features associated with the longstanding Google Assistant. This move marks a significant shift for Android users as well as those utilizing Google’s range of smart devices. With the phasing out expected to complete by 2025, here's a look at the features being removed and what users can expect in the future.

Gemini is set to replace the Google Assistant on most Android phones by 2025. After nearly a decade of valuable service since its launch in 2016, the Google Assistant will hand over the reins to Gemini, Google’s latest advancement in AI technology.

The transition to Gemini extends beyond Android phones, affecting various devices, including the Nest smart home products. Google has discreetly confirmed the retirement of several popular features, which include:

  • Live Translation in Interpreter mode: This feature, which allowed real-time translation across languages using Nest devices, will be eliminated. Users can still translate individual words or phrases but will lose the full interpreter capability.
  • Family Bell announcements: The reminder feature that offered audio alerts for routines, chores, or events will no longer be available.
  • Birthday reminder notifications: While users can no longer set birthday reminders via the Assistant, they can still create them manually using standard reminder functions.

  • Voice-based photo favorites and sharing: Users must now favorite and share photos manually; the voice command option is eliminated.
  • Voice commands for photo frame and ambient display settings: Users are now required to make these changes manually through the device menus.
  • Daily automated Assistant updates: Features like weather alerts will no longer be triggered by direct commands. Users can replicate similar results using custom routines.
  • Assistant through Bluetooth or AUX-connected car accessories: Interaction with Assistant via older Bluetooth and AUX car accessories will cease support, which has raised concerns among many users.

Future Prospects for Google Assistant Users

It is likely that many of these features, or enhanced versions, will be introduced to Gemini. Users can anticipate additional Gemini-related announcements during Google I/O 2025, scheduled for May 20-21. In the meantime, affected users may want to explore alternative functionalities that remain available.
