Sony Unveils Innovative Display Technology Featuring Individual RGB LED Control

Sony has made a groundbreaking announcement regarding its latest display technology, which utilizes advanced signal processing, individual RGB LED control, and a high-density backlight system. This new technology is not an OLED solution; however, Sony asserts that it matches or even surpasses OLED displays in several aspects.

Sony's Innovative RGB LED Technology

The highlight of Sony's new technology is its ability to control the red, green, and blue LEDs independently. This feature ensures vivid, accurate colors and broad coverage of color gamuts, even on large screens. The enhanced backlight control also allows the display to produce subtle hues and smooth light gradients, resulting in an exceptional viewing experience with deep blacks and precise tones.

In terms of specifications, this novel RGB LED setup achieves a remarkable 99% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space and approximately 90% coverage of the ITU-R BT.2020 color gamut. The zonal peak brightness reaches over 4,000 cd/m2, ensuring that HDR content is rendered beautifully.

Moreover, Sony claims that the precise backlight control addresses common challenges faced by current OLED displays, such as excessive brightness in certain areas, crushed blacks, and difficulties with nuanced tones.

To develop this cutting-edge technology, Sony collaborated with MediaTek for the control processors, ROHM for LED drive integrated circuits, and Sanan Optoelectronics for the LED components.

Sony intends to integrate this advanced technology into both consumer televisions and professional displays aimed at content creation, with plans for mass production later this year.
