Google Unveils Innovative Scam Detection Features for Android and Pixel Devices
In a bid to combat the increasing threat of phone scams, Google has announced the launch of cutting-edge features aimed at identifying fraud during calls and text messages. Utilizing artificial intelligence, these tools analyze conversations in real time, helping users stay one step ahead of cunning scammers. This forward-thinking approach is a significant advancement in mobile security, ensuring that users can communicate with peace of mind.
Today, Google surprised the tech community by rolling out two new features specifically designed to detect scams during ongoing phone calls and text exchanges. As scammers become increasingly sophisticated, employing more deceptive tactics, this innovative technology serves as a beacon of hope for protecting users from potential threats. The latest AI features, developed to catch red flags in real-time, promise a safer user experience, and garner widespread support.
Initially previewed at last year's Google I/O, the Scam Detection features have finally arrived after much anticipation. As we've witnessed, scammers have been relentless in their pursuit of exploiting unsuspecting individuals, often masquerading as trusted companies or deceptively soliciting personal information, leading to serious consequences like identity theft or significant financial loss.
For text messages, the AI system scans incoming content for suspicious activity and alerts users with a warning if a scam is detected. Users are given the option to either dismiss the alert or report the scammer. Automated protection is applied to messages from unknown contacts while ensuring that personal data remains private, as the AI operates directly on the user's device.
This feature supports SMS, MMS, and RCS messages and will be automatically enabled in the Google Messages app. Users can disable it by turning off the “Spam Protection” setting, which encompasses "Scam Detection." The initial rollout will be in English, targeting users in the U.S., U.K., and Canada, with plans for expansion to additional countries in the near future.

The Scam Detection feature underwent successful testing during a limited beta phase using Gemini Nano on Pixel 9 devices. Now, Google is broadening the beta availability to encompass all English-speaking Pixel 9 and newer users in the U.S.
Notably, this feature is optional and will be switched off by default. Once activated, it engages only during calls with individuals not on the user’s contact list. During these calls, a beep will signal to all participants that Scam Detection is active, fostering increased vigilance. Furthermore, users can deactivate the feature during a call if they prefer.
The audible alert during calls has surfaced as a significant point of interest. Based on user feedback, this notification encourages callers to remain cautious, hinting at the possibility that the other party may be aware of any fraudulent intentions. This could serve as a deterrent for would-be scammers, potentially leading them to abandon their schemes altogether.
