Google is continually enhancing its native Android applications, and Google Messages is no exception. Following recent updates that introduced a larger pill-shaped text field and an updated user interface for the "view details" feature, we now have exciting news about a visual change designed to refresh the user experience in Google Messages for Android.
First identified in the January beta version 20250115_03_RC00 and now making its way into the stable version 20250212_01_RC00, the latest Google Messages update introduces a captivating chat bubble animation. Once installed on your Android phone, you will notice that messages no longer simply slide up when sent or received. Instead, an engaging animation causes message bubbles to start small and gradually expand to fill their designated space. While it may not be a groundbreaking change, it certainly enhances the aesthetic appeal of the Messages app. Notably, this improved animation works seamlessly whether messages are sent or received through RCS or SMS protocols.
It is important to note that once this feature is activated with the update, there is no option to disable it. Additionally, if you are not aware of this forthcoming change, you might not immediately recognize the difference when it arrives on your Android phone. Expect to see the new chat bubble design roll out to Android devices over the coming weeks.

Given the diverse array of messaging applications available on the Android ecosystem, you may not currently be using Google Messages. If you're contemplating a switch, you can download Google Messages directly from Google's app storefront.
To check if you have access to the new expanding text bubble feature, navigate to Settings > Apps > All Apps > Messages, and scroll to the bottom of the page for the version number. Ensure you have a stable version of 20250212_01_RC00 or higher. For instance, the version on my Pixel 6 Pro running Android 16 beta 2 is 20250225_00_RC00.
