Last year, Apple introduced the iPad Air (2024) powered by the M2 chipset, adding a second, larger 13-inch model to its lineup. This change came alongside the launch of the iPad Pro (2024), which boasted a significant upgrade: the switch from LCD to OLED displays, reflecting in its higher pricing.
The introduction of the new 13-inch iPad Air (2024) aimed to satisfy consumers seeking a larger device without the premium cost that comes with the OLED displays in the iPad Pro (2024). With LCD displays, the iPad Air still delivers ample screen space at a more accessible price point, and Apple also repositioned the front-facing camera to improve photo-taking in landscape orientation.
Recent insights from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicate that Apple is preparing to upgrade the iPad Air line by replacing the M2 chip with the more robust and efficient M4 processor. Gurman highlighted this anticipated upgrade late last year and reiterated in his recent Power On newsletter that the new iPad Air (2025) could be announced imminently.
According to Gurman, inventory levels of the iPad Air (2024) are declining in Apple Stores, mirroring trends observed prior to the announcement of the iPhone SE 3 and the upcoming iPhone 16e. Additionally, the entry-level iPad is also running low in stock, which Gurman suggests might launch concurrently with the new iPad Air. Regarding the high-end iPad Pro, Gurman believes that Apple will delay the next generation until later in the year, aiming for the release of models powered by the M5 system-on-chip (SoC) to enhance the 11-inch and 13-inch variants.
While Gurman doesn’t expect an immediate release of the new iPad Air (2025), he notes it is certainly on the horizon. With the first quarter of the year coming to a close, the expectation is that Apple will unveil several new products in the coming weeks.
