In an unexpected move, Huawei has unveiled the Mate 70 Pro Premium Edition, an alternative version of its flagship smartphone that initially launched in November with the powerful Kirin 9020 chipset. The new Premium Edition is set to hit the market on March 5, but consumers may find the offering puzzling due to its underclocked CPU and revised price point on the company’s Vmall store.
Despite its name implying enhancements, the Premium Edition features a downgraded processor, although this detail was absent from the official announcement. A recent Geekbench listing revealed that the Huawei Mate 70 Pro Premium Edition, identified by model number PLR-AL50, achieved a single-core score of 1,450 and a multi-core score of 3,793. These benchmark results are underwhelming, rivaling those of the Infinix Zero 40 mid-range smartphone.
The device retains much of the original model's specifications, including a vibrant 6.9" OLED display with a smooth 120 Hz refresh rate, a versatile camera setup featuring a 50 MP main sensor, a 40 MP ultra-wide lens, and a 48 MP macro telephoto camera, alongside a robust 5,500 mAh battery capable of 100W wired and 80W wireless charging.
The Huawei Mate 70 Pro Premium Edition will be offered in four attractive colors: Green, Purple, White, and Black. It comes with 12 GB of RAM and three storage options – CNY 6,199 ($850) for 256 GB, CNY 6,699 ($920) for 512 GB, and CNY 7,699 ($1,050) for the 1 TB variant.
However, it is unlikely that this model will be available outside of China.
