iPhone 16e: A Disappointing Entry-Level Option with a Price Tag Too High

Source: Date:

Apple, the sole provider of iOS smartphones, is tasked with creating entry-level options for its users. However, the company's image as a premium product maker complicates this mission. The newly released Apple iPhone 16e has surfaced as a questionable entry-level model.

As we delve into the attributes of the device, we must first confront the glaring issue of its pricing. With a starting price of $600/€700/£600/₹60,000, it stands significantly higher than the $400/$430 entry points of the previous two iPhone SE generations. While the 16e offers double the storage at 128GB, many still consider this amount insufficient.

In last week’s poll, an overwhelming 39% of voters indicated that the price makes the 16e an unappealing choice. This figure likely would be even greater if we exclude individuals who are simply not in the market for an iPhone at all.

For those still set on purchasing an iPhone, the standard models—iPhone 15 or 16—appear to be the more favored choices. Several commenters even expressed anticipation for the iPhone 17, which is expected to introduce features like a 120Hz refresh rate and Always-on Display (AoD). Additionally, once the iPhone 17 series arrives, the price of the iPhone 16 should drop to about $700, effectively replacing the position currently held by the iPhone 15. The difference between these two models is minimal, with the iPhone 16 supporting Apple Intelligence, faster MagSafe capabilities, and improved battery life (15:42h Active use compared to 13:20h).

Many users have voiced their disappointment over the discontinuation of the iPhone mini series. The original assumption was that the upcoming fourth iPhone SE would resemble the mini, rather than adopting an iPhone 14-like design. Even the previous third SE model was more compact than the iPhone 16e, leaving small phone enthusiasts with fewer options. This concern appeared to resonate with a small minority, constituting just over 2% of the votes.

Regarding the device itself, marketing a phone with a 60Hz display and a single camera in 2025 raises eyebrows, and at $600, it becomes hard to justify. Should the pricing become more competitive, the 16e may warrant a reconsideration. Until then, it seems that many potential buyers will opt for alternative devices.
