New Findings on Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra''s Gorilla Armor 2 Glass Durability

Source: Date:

Samsung's latest flagship, the Galaxy S25 Ultra, has been unveiled with a new protective feature: Gorilla Armor 2 glass. According to Corning, this new glass should provide superior drop resistance, able to withstand falls from 2.2m (7.2ft) onto concrete. However, recent testing suggests that while it excels in drop protection, it may compromise scratch resistance compared to the previous generation's Gorilla Armor used in the S24 Ultra.

Industry tester Zack from JerryRigEverything examined the S25 Ultra and found that its Gorilla Armor 2 glass scratched at a Mohs hardness level of 6. In contrast, his tests on the Galaxy S24 Ultra indicated that its Gorilla Armor displayed better scratch resistance, scratching at a level of 7—despite some minor marks from a level 6 pick. These observations raise questions about the trade-offs involved in the new formulation of Gorilla Armor 2 glass.

It's important to note that achieving higher drop resistance may lead to increased softness in the material, making it more susceptible to scratches. This occurs because manufacturers must carefully balance the glass's hardness for scratch resistance and its ability to absorb impact without shattering. Despite these concerns, Gorilla Armor 2 retains impressive anti-reflective properties and benefits from improvements in display quality, addressing previous complaints about graininess in low brightness scenarios with the S24 Ultra.

As consumers weigh the trade-offs of drop resistance versus scratch vulnerability, the Galaxy S25 Ultra presents a compelling package that continues to evolve the flagship smartphone experience.
