TikTok''s US Ban Postponed: New Deadline Set for April 2025

Source: Date:

In a surprising turn of events, TikTok has received a temporary reprieve from its recent ban in the United States. The app, which faced immediate removal from app stores and access issues lasting 13 hours, will now operate as usual following a directive from President Donald Trump. His first executive order, effective January 20, 2025, delays the enforcement of the ban for 75 days, providing TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, additional time to strategize its future in the American market.

The newly established deadline requires ByteDance to divest its stake in TikTok to a US-based entity by April 5, 2025. This executive action compels the Department of Justice to refrain from enforcing the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act for the interim, aiming to strike a balance between safeguarding national security and maintaining the platform's operation, which currently serves 170 million American users.

The timing of this decision is crucial as it allows my Administration to negotiate a pathway that prevents a disruptive shutdown of the TikTok platform while still addressing security issues. I have instructed the Attorney General to pause any enforcement of the Act for the next 75 days to find a solution that prioritizes both national security and the interests of millions of users. – President Donald Trump

President Trump has suggested the possibility of a joint venture that would see the US government acquiring a 50% stake in TikTok, a proposal that could shape the app's future in the US market. As TikTok's operations resume uninterrupted, the next few months will be vital in determining the platform's long-term viability and relationship with American regulators.
