Samsung is gearing up for the launch of its flagship Galaxy S25 series, which will feature enhanced specifications aimed at delivering a superior user experience. To ensure optimal performance and efficiency, Samsung has decided to incorporate at least 12GB of RAM in each model of the 2025 Galaxy S lineup—a significant upgrade from the 8GB minimum found in the Galaxy S24 series. This transition will enhance multitasking capabilities and bolster on-device AI functionalities in the Galaxy S25.
Despite maintaining support for the LPDDR5X RAM standard, the Galaxy S25 series will benefit from improved energy efficiency and performance due to a strategic shift in RAM sourcing. Instead of using its own LPDDR5X RAM chips, Samsung will utilize Micron's 12GB RAM modules. The decision was influenced by Micron's advancement in manufacturing, as their chips will be produced using a more efficient 12nm process node compared to Samsung's previous 13nm technology.
One of the critical factors driving this change was Samsung's previous struggles with overheating in its RAM chips. While the company managed to address these overheating issues, they were unable to resolve them in time to incorporate their own chips into the Galaxy S25, which could have resulted in a delay of the flagship models. Considering the competitive landscape, particularly with the upcoming OnePlus 13 posing a significant threat, Samsung was keen to avoid any postponements.
In addition to making changes to the RAM supplier, Samsung will also forgo using its proprietary 3nm Exynos 2500 application processor for the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+ models due to challenges with yield rates in production. Instead, the flagship devices will feature the powerful yet costly Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy application processor. The launch of the Exynos 2500 is now expected to take place during the summer with the introduction of the Galaxy Z Flip FE.
Ultimately, the various challenges stemming from RAM overheating issues and production delays for the Exynos chip may lead Samsung to increase the prices of the Galaxy S25 series. Consequently, consumers planning to purchase the Galaxy S25 models may find that the price tag comes with a few extra dollars attached.
