Cyberattack Disrupts Wi-Fi and Services at ASML's Academic Partner

A recent cyberattack has caused significant disruption at a prominent Dutch technical university located just five miles from ASML's global headquarters. This university plays a crucial role in nurturing talent for ASML, the sole manufacturer of advanced lithography machines that are vital for producing high-performance semiconductors found in modern devices such as smartphones. As a consequence of the attack, several network-dependent services—including email, Wi-Fi, Canvas, and Teams—are currently inaccessible. However, the campus facilities remain open, with staff and students able to enter using operational card readers. According to reports, officials are still investigating whether any sensitive data was compromised and plan to release updates on the situation soon. ASML has invested heavily in the university, pledging €80 million ($82 million) in May to enhance doctoral programs and upgrade research facilities, which are integral to the semiconductor field. Additionally, ASML's lithography machines are utilized for academic research within the university's lab facilities. The university has previously faced scrutiny concerning its substantial number of Chinese students amid ongoing tensions in the US-China chip war, with American officials expressing concerns despite the influx of Chinese students at US institutions. University President Robert-Jan Smits has commented on the matter, noting the discrepancies in visa policies between the two nations.
