T-Mobile and Starlink Join Forces to Provide Lifeline for L.A. Wildfire Victims Through Satellite Text Messaging

The devastating wildfires ravaging Los Angeles have resulted in substantial destruction, including the loss of over 1,000 buildings, severe property damage, and at least 10 tragic fatalities. The ongoing emergency has severely disrupted communication, isolating many residents from loved ones and essential support due to the destruction of cell infrastructure and widespread power outages.
In response to this pressing need, T-Mobile and Starlink have launched their Direct-to-Cell satellite messaging system, enabling residents in the affected areas to send essential text messages using their mobile devices. This initiative allows T-Mobile subscribers in the Los Angeles region to communicate with family and friends and, crucially, to text 911 in case of emergencies. As T-Mobile explained, this service utilizes an early test version of the Direct-to-Cell technology developed by SpaceX, specifically designed for such times of crisis.

This much-needed service arrives at a critical time, especially since only half of T-Mobile’s cellular network has been restored in Los Angeles. Many residents remain without vital connectivity, making the Direct-to-Cell system a promising solution for maintaining communication during this disaster.

In a statement on X, SpaceX said, "For those in the Los Angeles area, the @Starlink team and @TMobile have enabled basic texting (SMS) through our Direct-to-Cell satellites. You can now text loved ones, text 911, and receive emergency alerts." Additionally, iPhone 14, 15, and 16 users who are not T-Mobile customers can also access this satellite messaging service.
