In a significant stride away from its traditional budget-friendly smartphones, HMD Global has launched a groundbreaking device designed to enhance connectivity for users in remote areas. The OffGrid device offers a unique solution enabling both iOS and Android users to connect directly to satellites, ensuring communication even in the most challenging conditions.
The OffGrid harnesses L Band satellite radio spectrum technology, known for its reliability. As stated by HMD, the device is equipped with features such as 24/7 emergency response capabilities, a robust three-day battery life, and military-grade durability (MIL-STD-810H).

Weighing merely 60 grams, the OffGrid is compact enough to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand, making it a must-have gadget for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers. The device is complemented by a dedicated app that facilitates two-way messaging and live location tracking for up to five users. Additionally, the OffGrid includes a useful "check-in" feature, allowing users to effortlessly send pre-configured messages to loved ones at the push of a button. Enhanced safety comes in the form of the Overwatch x Rescue premium service, which offers 24/7 multilingual emergency response coordination and fully funded assistance from FocusPoint International.

However, it's important to note that these impressive features do come at a cost. Aside from the device price of £170 / $200, users must also subscribe to a premium search and rescue plan. There are two subscription options available:
  • HMD Unlimited Plan: $14.99/month or $139.99/year for unlimited messages, check-ins, and SOS services, with an optional unlimited live tracking feature for an additional $4.99/month. A one-time activation fee of $9.99 applies.
  • HMD Freedom Plan: A one-time payment of $79.99/year which includes up to 350 text and check-in messages, with live tracking available for $4.99/month and a one-time activation fee of $19.99.

HMD Global has announced that the OffGrid will be available starting in January across the United States, Europe, and Australia/New Zealand, with plans to extend availability to more regions in 2025.
