Affordable Android 14 Go Edition Smartphone: Introducing the HMD Key

Source: Date:
The HMD Key is redefining what an entry-level smartphone can be with its strikingly low price point of just £59, available at HMD.com in stylish Midnight Black and Icy Blue. This model blurs the lines between traditional feature phones and smartphones, making it an appealing option for budget-conscious consumers looking for a taste of modern mobile technology. However, to achieve this remarkably low price, HMD Global has implemented several compromises in the phone's design and capabilities. The limitations in hardware have resulted in the HMD Key not being able to support the latest full-fledged Android version, instead shipping with Android 14 Go edition.

The HMD Key is powered by a dated Unisoc 9832E chipset, coupled with just 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded up to 128 GB. These specs indicate why the device adopts the Go edition—a lighter version of Android designed for devices with lower hardware capabilities.
On the camera front, there's an 8-megapixel main sensor on the back, accompanied by a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, which should satisfy basic selfie needs. While HMD Global promises quarterly security updates for two years, users shouldn't hold their breath for Android OS upgrades. Additional features include Bluetooth 4.2, a USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Overall, despite its enticing price, the HMD Key may leave users wanting more. For those seeking higher performance and better features, it might be worth investing a little extra for a more capable device.
