Tecno has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, establishing itself as a key player in developing markets. As part of the Transsion Holdings family, which includes brands like Infinix and itel, Tecno launched a variety of impressive smartphones in 2024. From the innovative Phantom V Fold2 and V Flip2 foldables to the feature-rich Camon 30 and the powerful Pova 6 series, Tecno showcased its diverse offerings. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding its global market expansion and addressing certain product shortcomings.
Highlights: Phantom V Fold2 and V Flip2
Emerging as a formidable contender in the foldable smartphone arena, Tecno's
V Fold2 is not only 50 grams lighter than its predecessor but also significantly slimmer, offering a superior user experience. The phone features an updated touch-friendly vegan leather back, a newly designed camera island, and an IP54 rating, all of which contribute to its premium feel. Notable improvements include stylus support, a new 50MP ultrawide camera, and the optimized Android 14 interface tailored for large screens.
The V Flip2 also impresses with its polished build, featuring an easily accessible 3.64-inch cover screen, a 50MP ultrawide camera, an upgraded 4,720 mAh battery, and ultra-fast 70W charging capabilities.
Priced attractively at INR 79,999 ($945/€890) for the V Fold2 and INR 34,999 ($415/€390) for the V Flip2, these foldables stand out as some of the most economical options available. However, Tecno still faces challenges with global availability, which we hope to see addressed in the upcoming generations of the Phantom series.
Spotlight on Camon 30 Premier
The Camon 30 Premier encapsulates high-end features without the hefty price tag – a true value champion.
With its premium design, solid battery life, speedy 70W charging, and impressive audio quality, this device deserves more recognition. As we look to 2025, we hope Tecno can broaden its market reach, especially with the anticipated Camon 40 Premier building on the strengths of the Camon 30 Premier.
Pova 6 Pro: A Gamer's Delight
Likewise commendable is the Tecno Pova 6 Pro, designed with gamers in mind.
The device features a striking design with transparent elements, angular shapes, and an LED notification strip. Key specifications include a 120Hz AMOLED display, a robust 108MP main camera, and a massive 6,000 mAh battery complemented by rapid 70W charging. Featuring the reliable Dimensity 6080 chipset and the user-friendly HiOS 14 based on Android 14, the Pova 6 Pro offers an exceptional retail package in the €300 category.
Challenges: Spark 20 Pro+
On the downside, the Spark 20 Pro+ does not fully meet expectations. While it stands out as a competent midrange device, it suffers from some drawbacks. The aging MediaTek Helio G99 processor and the absence of a definitive software update policy are notable concerns.
The 6.78-inch curved AMOLED display lacks HDR support and offers a modest 549 nits of brightness. Moreover, our review unit ran on the outdated HiOS 13.6, missing out on the latest upgrades, and we encountered some Wi-Fi stability issues. These factors suggest that the Spark 20 Pro+ could have benefited from better execution.
Global Reach: A Significant Hurdle
Tecno has made commendable strides with its well-received midrange Camon and Pova lines and its affordable Phantom series. However, despite its strong presence in emerging markets, the brand has yet to translate this success into established Western markets. We look forward to seeing Tecno address this gap soon.
Waiting for the Phantom X2 Pro Successor
It has been over two years since the launch of the Phantom X2 Pro. As the tech landscape continues to evolve, consumers are eager for an update that reflects current demands and innovations.
As Tecno pushes into 2024, we anticipate exciting developments that could reshape its portfolio and expand its footprint.
