T-Mobile is making strides toward the anticipated launch of its Starlink beta, which will enable users in areas lacking traditional cellular or Wi-Fi coverage to send and receive texts via satellite. This innovative service, dubbed "a cellphone tower in space," will eventually allow subscribers to access voice and data functionalities as well. Users with compatible devices can check their status by navigating to Settings > Connections > Satellite networks.
Currently, several T-Mobile subscribers using Samsung Galaxy models, including the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy Z Fold 6, are discovering the Satellite networks option on their devices. Additionally, select iPhone users have started receiving invitations to set up Starlink, indicating that T-Mobile is approaching a beta launch for this satellite communication feature.
"Satellite messaging may take longer and is available only in some areas. Weather and certain structures may affect your satellite connection. Calling via satellite isn't available, although emergency calls may still connect if a mobile network is available nearby," states Samsung, providing insights into potential limitations of the service.
It's interesting to note that while T-Mobile's Starlink service is designed to work seamlessly with its network, other offerings such as Google's Pixel Satellite SOS feature operate on a separate satellite network run by Skylo, independent of any U.S. carrier.
