Major Recall: Almost 500,000 Charmast Power Banks Sold on Amazon Found to Be Hazardous

Source: Date:
Power banks have become an essential tech accessory for smartphone users, allowing the freedom to charge devices on-the-go. Typically available in various capacities—from compact models offering 1000-5000mAh power, akin to the size of a playing card, to larger variants boasting over 25,000mAh—these chargers are vital for maintaining connectivity.
However, a significant safety concern has emerged, as nearly 500,000 power banks sold exclusively on Amazon over the past six years have been recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). These power banks, manufactured by Charmast, have been reported to exhibit dangerous behaviors such as melting, overheating, expanding, smoking, and even igniting, making them a serious risk to users. The recalled power banks were available in multiple colors including black, blue, green, mint, pink, and white, clearly marked with the brand name "Charmast" on the front, and the model number "W1056" on the back.
For anyone in possession of these potentially hazardous power banks, it is crucial to cease usage immediately and reach out to Charmast for guidance on obtaining a full refund. To initiate the return process, consumers must send a photograph of their W1056 model power bank, along with a letter that includes their name, the date on which the photograph was taken, and the severed power cord of the device. This information should be marked clearly in permanent ink above the label.

Upon completing the letter and photograph requirement, users should dispose of the power bank in accordance with local and state regulations. To date, Charmast has received 44 reports of the power bank exhibiting dangerous behaviors, with four consumers suffering from burns or blisters. The product, which relies on lithium batteries, requires careful disposal; the CPSC advises against discarding it in regular trash or conventional battery recycling bins found in retail outlets or home improvement stores.
Sold exclusively on Amazon from December 2018 until September 2024 at prices ranging from $14 to $25, the Charmast W1056 power bank was produced in China. Consumers can contact Charmast by calling Recall Phone Contact at (929)-636-0293, available Monday through Friday from 10 am to 3 pm EST, or via email at rcus@charmast.com.
