Vipps, a groundbreaking Norwegian payment application, is set to challenge Apple Pay by gaining access to the NFC chip on Apple devices. This innovative platform currently serves users in Norway for both online transactions and NFC payments, allowing users to select Vipps as their default payment method on iPhones.
The launch of Vipps is a direct result of pressure from the European Commission, which mandated that Apple provide access to its NFC technology. This opens the door for Vipps to function as a third-party solution for iOS users, offering a versatile platform for numerous transactions, such as in-store purchases, online shopping, sending money to friends and organizations, and facilitating personal fundraising efforts.
We have worked tirelessly to level the playing field against Apple. Launching our own solution feels almost surreal, and we look forward to an exciting competition against such a formidable brand. – Rune Garborg, Vipps MobilePay Manager
Currently, Vipps is compatible with BankAxept cards, and there are plans to integrate Mastercard and Visa options soon. The company also aims to extend its tap-to-pay capabilities to other Nordic countries, including Denmark, Finland, and Sweden.
