Google has officially launched Gemini 2.0, its newest AI model that introduces impressive features such as multimodal output for images and audio, along with enhanced tool integration, marking a significant step towards what the company describes as the “agentic era” of artificial intelligence. These agentic AI models are designed to autonomously carry out tasks with adaptive decision-making capabilities, such as managing shopping lists or scheduling appointments based solely on user prompts.
Gemini 2.0 comes equipped with multiple agentic assistants that span various applications, capable of delivering real-time suggestions in video games like Clash of Clans and automatically curating gift selections to add to online shopping carts based on user instructions.
Similar to other AI frameworks, the agents within Gemini 2.0 exhibit goal-oriented behavior, forming task-oriented lists and executing them autonomously. Among the standout features are Project Astra, a universal AI assistant tailored for Android devices with multimodal support, and integration with Google Search, Lens, and Maps.
Additionally, Project Mariner emerges as a groundbreaking experimental AI agent capable of autonomous web navigation, currently being trialed for select testers as a Chrome extension.
In terms of functionality, Gemini 2.0 Flash represents the debut iteration of Google's latest AI model, which is in beta. This version boasts reduced latency, superior benchmark performance, and enhanced mathematical and coding reasoning compared to its predecessors, Gemini 1.0 and 1.5. Gemini 2.0 Flash also integrates native image generation powered by Google DeepMind's Imagen 3 text-to-image model.
Available via the web, Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental will soon be accessible on the mobile Gemini app, allowing users to select this experimental feature from a dropdown menu for testing purposes.
