Google Pixels Update Introduces 80% Battery Charge Limit and Direct Power Bypass Feature

Source: Date:

In a significant enhancement, the latest update for Google Pixel smartphones now offers users the option to limit their device's battery charge to 80%. This feature aims to extend the lifespan of the battery by mitigating wear over time. Furthermore, the update introduces a bypass capability that allows devices to run on external power sources directly, minimizing reliance on the internal battery.

To activate these newly introduced features, users should access the Settings menu, then navigate to Battery and toggle the "Use charging optimization" setting to "Limit to 80%." This adjustment helps users maintain their battery health while still keeping their devices powered. Users can confirm the settings are functioning properly by monitoring the battery status; it should indicate "not charging" while showing the power source as "AC." Although the phone may occasionally charge to 100% for calibration, it will predominantly stay at 80% for optimal performance.

While Google hasn't outlined specific charger requirements for using the bypass feature, it's worth noting that similar functionalities offered by other brands—like Samsung's "Pause USB Power"—usually have specifications, such as requiring USB Power Delivery chargers that support PPS and have at least a 25W capacity.
