The launch of the OnePlus 16 has created quite the buzz in the smartphone market, as it recorded remarkable sales in mere moments after going live. The device, which debuted in China on Monday, went on sale today at 10 AM local time and sold an impressive 70,000 units within the first hour.

Li Jie, the president of OnePlus China, shared this milestone on Weibo, stating that this sales figure places the OnePlus 16 at the top of the list among this year’s Android flagship smartphones, a rare achievement in today’s competitive market. However, OnePlus has not disclosed the sales numbers for its predecessor during the same period, leaving some context for comparison lacking.

The OnePlus 16 boasts impressive specifications, featuring a 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a resolution of 1272x2772 and a refresh rate of 165Hz (with support for 185Hz in select games). Under the hood, it packs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset, coupled with a maximum of 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage. Its camera setup is equally captivating, highlighted by a 200MP main sensor with optical image stabilization, a 50MP periscope telephoto lens offering 3x optical zoom, and a 50MP ultrawide camera with autofocus capabilities. Additionally, the device offers a robust 9,000 mAh battery featuring 100W wired and 50W wireless charging, alongside IP66/IP68/IP69/IP69K ratings for water and dust resistance. The starting price is CNY 5,999 (approximately $896).

However, fans outside of China may feel disappointed as OnePlus has officially exited the European and North American markets as of July. Consequently, the OnePlus 16 will not be available in these regions, which is unfortunate given the brand’s evident popularity at home, as demonstrated by this record-setting sales figure.
