Global Computer Shipments Experience Significant Decline in Q3 2023

Source: Date:

The computer industry is facing a challenging period as global shipments have significantly dropped in the third quarter of 2023. This article delves into the latest statistics from IDC, highlighting the factors behind this decline and the impact on major players in the market.

According to IDC's latest report, global computer shipments plummeted by 20.1% in Q3 2023 (July-September) compared to the same timeframe last year, totaling 62.7 million units. This marks the second consecutive quarter of decline, following a modest decrease of 3.8% in Q2 2023. Compared to the previous quarter, shipments in Q3 also fell by 9.1%, indicating a troubling trend for the industry.

It is important to note that these findings reflect shipments rather than actual sales to consumers. IDC points out that, throughout the first half of the year, retailers increased their inventory levels, anticipating price increases. Consequently, in Q3, many retailers prioritized depleting existing stock rather than acquiring new inventory.

Jitesh Ubrani, the IDC research director for consumer devices, noted, "Channels are now worried about carrying too much inventory into a market where high prices are suppressing demand." While this could lead to occasional promotions, IDC predicts that prices will remain elevated across the sector. "With macro conditions worsening, the risk is that the outlook for the next few quarters gets worse before it gets better," Ubrani added.
