Discovering the All-New Electric Jeep Compass 4xe: A True Arctic Testing Ground

The automotive world is witnessing a remarkable shift towards electrification, and Jeep is at the forefront with the all-new Compass 4xe. This compact crossover has shed its past liabilities and embraced electric power, all while enduring rigorous testing in one of the harshest environments on Earth—the Arctic. Designed for family-friendly adventures and off-road thrills alike, the Compass 4xe combines cutting-edge technology, impressive performance, and a rugged pedigree. Join us as we explore how this remarkable vehicle found its true soul amidst the icy expanse of Sweden.

Jeep Compass 4xe Arctic Testing

Located fifty miles south of the Arctic Circle, Arjeplog, Sweden, serves as an unforgiving testing ground, where automotive engineers put their designs through the ultimate trials. Unlike mere promotional stunts, watching the fully electric Jeep Compass 4xe navigate the ice brings genuine excitement. Jeep's engineers embraced the challenge with a mischievous approach to build a vehicle that truly delivers on its promises.

The history of the Compass nameplate has seen its ups and downs—originally introduced in 2006 with a lighter chassis, it was more about aesthetics than true off-road capability. The earlier hybrid versions struggled to connect combustion engines with electric assistance, resulting in a compromised driving experience. The new Jeep Compass 4xe, however, completely redefines this legacy by adopting a fully electric drivetrain built on the Stellantis STLA Medium architecture.

Electric drivetrain of Compass 4xe

This iteration features a formidable dual-motor setup, with a front motor producing 157 kW and 345 Nm of torque, complemented by a rear motor generating 132 kW and 232 Nm. This dynamic design ensures that the rear motor's attached heavy-duty reduction gearset translates to a staggering 3,100 Nm of torque at the wheels instantly, guaranteeing powerful traction from any standstill. Together, these motors produce a robust 375 horsepower, enabling the Compass to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in an exhilarating 4.9 seconds.

The Compass retains all-wheel drive up to 140 km/h in Sport mode, meaning that adventurous drivers can enjoy dynamic driving without concern for losing traction during exciting maneuvers.

Truly innovative, the Compass 4xe employs an advanced electronic system that monitors wheel slip and drivetrain performance, allowing a level of control not typically found in mechanical systems. The ultra-precise digital controller provides a seamless connection between the driver and the vehicle, enabling enjoyable drifting and handling on slippery surfaces without detracting from power delivery.

Powered by a 96.1 kWh battery pack, the Compass 4xe promises a substantial European WLTP range of 606 km, although winter conditions may reduce this to a more practical 400 km. With fast-charging capabilities of up to 160 kW, drivers can recharge the battery from 20% to 80% in just around 30 minutes.

Jeep Compass specifications

With dimensions measuring 4,587 mm in length, 1,936 mm in width, and a height of 1,689 mm, the Compass 4xe boasts a striking presence. Its styling distinguishes it from competitors, while offering a competitive luggage volume of 515 liters that holds its own against cars like the Peugeot e-3008 and Volkswagen ID.4 GTX.

The Compass shares its STLA Medium foundation with other models within the Stellantis family, yet Jeep's engineers ensured that it possesses the ruggedness and agility expected from an authentic American off-roader. The independent multilink rear suspension and generous ground clearance allow it to tackle tough terrains without compromise.

Jeep Compass interior

The exterior design is a bold departure from previous models; the iconic seven-slot grille is reimagined as an aerodynamic feature while full-LED Matrix headlights offer enhanced visibility. In the interior, the Jeep Compass 4xe strikes a balance between modern digital technology and practical utility, boasting a 16-inch Uconnect touchscreen and a configurable 10-inch digital instrument cluster.

The Compass 4xe is now available to order across Europe, with prices starting at €56,700 for the high-end model. This pricing positions the Compass competitively against other electric vehicles such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Tesla Model Y, and signifies a pivotal moment for Jeep as it fully embraces electric vehicle technology.
