Qualcomm has recently expressed its intentions to explore Samsung's advanced 2nm process technology, indicating a potential shift in chip manufacturing partnerships. The ongoing relationship between Qualcomm and Samsung indicates a robust collaboration that may shape future product developments.
Just a few weeks ago, rumors hinted at Qualcomm's interest in leveraging Samsung's 2nm process node for some of its latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips. However, the company ultimately chose TSMC as the manufacturer for these chips, similar to its recent high-end Snapdragon offerings.
In a recent statement, Chris Patrick, Qualcomm's Senior Vice President and Head of Mobile Handsets, confirmed that the company is "conducting in-depth work regarding Samsung's 2nm process technology". He emphasized the close partnership between Qualcomm and Samsung, suggesting that it aligns with Qualcomm's relationship with TSMC.
Patrick highlighted that Samsung Foundry has been a "long-standing core partner of Qualcomm" and will continue to play a significant role in the company's future endeavors. Qualcomm is currently in the process of evaluating how to effectively utilize Samsung's 2nm technology in upcoming products.
Additionally, Patrick acknowledged the strong alliance between Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics, the manufacturers of Galaxy smartphones, referring to Samsung as Qualcomm's "strongest partner globally" in the mobile sector. The partnership has also extended to collaborations on LPDDR6 memory commercialization, with engineering teams from both companies actively working on its complexities.
