In a brave move that bridges the past with the present, Audi has unveiled the 2027 Audi A2 e-tron, reviving a classic nameplate from 1999. The original A2 was a pioneering lightweight model that encountered market indifference due to its avant-garde design and engineering. Fast forward to today, and Audi is reintroducing this name with a modern twist, transforming it into a sleek electric compact crossover that aligns perfectly with today's automotive landscape.

The original A2 was an extraordinary exercise in minimizing weight, tipping the scales at under 1,000 kg. In contrast, the new electric incarnation weighs in at a hefty 1,840 kg to 1,930 kg depending on the configuration. This doubling of weight serves as a poignant reminder of the realities of current battery technology and its implications on vehicle weight.

While the purist may lament the loss of the original's lightweight charm, the new model embraces the DNA of its predecessor. The A2 e-tron showcases a distinctive arched roofline, a bold front end, and a split-glass rear tailgate, all contributing to a confident and purposeful appearance.

Unlike its predecessors, the A2 e-tron is built on a more conventional rear-wheel-drive MEB platform rather than Audi's performance-focused PPE architecture or the MEB+ that caters to more affordable models. This platform offers a generous 2,770 mm wheelbase that extends to the corners of the body, delivering impressive passenger space.

In terms of storage, the A2 e-tron provides 396 l of cargo capacity, expandable to 1,336 l with the rear seats folded. This outperforms its immediate rivals, such as the Volkswagen ID.3, which offers only 385 l, while still being less than the Renault Megane E-Tech's 440 l of space.

Audi aims to set a record for efficiency with the A2 e-tron, promoting it as the most aerodynamic production model to date with a drag coefficient of just 0.24 Cd. Features contributing to its efficiency include a flat underbody, active cooling mechanisms, and aerodynamic tweaks to optimize airflow.

The lineup consists of four distinct powertrains, beginning with a base 52 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery connected to a 125 kW (168 hp) motor, boasting a WLTP range of 423 km. For those seeking more power, options include a 61 kWh battery and a dual-motor 84 kWh battery, with the latter variant achieving a WLTP range of 646 km and a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 7.0 seconds.

Charging capabilities vary across models, with the 84 kWh battery reaching a maximum of 183 kW, while smaller packs allow for a more modest 100-105 kW. A standout feature is the Vehicle-to-Load technology, allowing users to power devices directly from the car.

Inside, the A2 e-tron prioritizes sustainable luxury. The cabin features a novel "Softwrap" fabric and a redesigned console, making room for an inductive charging station for smartphones. A significant display experience is enhanced by Fidlock tech, allowing accessories to be easily attached within the interior.

With development completed in just 21 months—a remarkable feat for a legacy brand—the A2 e-tron represents Audi's commitment to innovation. Scheduled to open for orders soon, the inaugural price starts at an accessible €38,200, making it an attractive entry into the electric vehicle market.

While the 2027 Audi A2 e-tron may not echo the lightweight ethos of its predecessor, it stands as a symbol of practical modernity, offering a valuable addition to the everyday electric vehicle roster in an era where efficiency and usability are paramount.
