Real-World Efficiency of the BMW iX3: Our Road Trip Experience

Source: Date:

Introduction

The BMW iX3 50 xDrive has made a splash in the electric vehicle market with its promises of impressive efficiency and range. After bringing home our new ride, we put these claims to the ultimate test during an adventurous road trip. This article chronicles our journey, highlighting the iX3's performance and everything we learned about living with this electric SUV.

Immediately after delivery, we set off from the dealership to a seaside destination, covering an impressive 400 km in one continuous trip. After enjoying our time there, we started our return journey, surpassing the 400 km mark once again.

Our starting elevation was significantly higher than our coastal destination, which set our expectations for the outbound leg to yield better efficiency figures while anticipating some drop in performance on the way back due to elevation gain.

As shown in the trip computer images below, our first journey was slightly shorter and completed at a somewhat higher average speed. We used cruise control at 140 km/h, but due to traffic and road construction, our average settled at 120 km/h. By the trip's end, the iX3 50 xDrive demonstrated it could cover 535 km at highway speeds, with air conditioning running in an outside temperature of 29°C. This remarkable performance is further proof of the iX3's efficiency.

The return journey was longer, and traffic lowered our average speed. Nevertheless, consumption only marginally increased due to the uphill climb. With an average speed of 113 km/h, our data suggests a fully charged battery would still offer a range of 524 km, which remains incredibly impressive.

To help drivers simulate their driving conditions more accurately, we recommend using our specially designed widget, which can replicate various scenarios. As observed, using the larger 21” wheels resulted in slightly diminished efficiency, aligning with expectations. This data reaffirms both the reliability of our widget and the iX3's solid performance across varied conditions.

Our choice of a white interior paired with a Brooklyn Grey exterior proved practical for the summer heat, as the cabin cooled rapidly. Additionally, the ability to control the air conditioning via an app significantly compensated for the absence of ventilated seats during short trips.

We had high hopes for the BMW iX3 prior to purchase, yet it has successfully surpassed even our ambitious expectations regarding range and efficiency thus far.

If you have any queries about owning and living with the BMW iX3 50 xDrive, feel free to send them our way. We look forward to sharing more insights from our ownership journey. Until next time!
