First announced in June and officially detailed by Meta recently, the Scam Alert feature can now be accessed in beta version 2.26.34.1 of WhatsApp for Android, as noted by the tech enthusiasts at WABetaInfo. Although there is no confirmed timeline for its public rollout, the ongoing beta testing suggests that a wider launch is imminent.
This feature alerts users when they receive messages that may be scams, all while ensuring the sender remains unaware of the recipient's use of the Scam Alert. Users have the option to mark these senders as trusted or to block and report them. Furthermore, if users mark a conversation as trusted, they can share the last five messages from that chat with WhatsApp to improve the feature's accuracy.
It's important to note that users must manually enable the Scam Alert feature by navigating to the Settings > Account menu within WhatsApp for Android, as it is an optional feature.
Meta has stated that WhatsApp's Scam Alert utilizes an on-device machine learning model to identify potential scam messages without sending any message content off the user’s device for analysis.
