Meta’s popular messaging platform, WhatsApp, has rolled out a new Scam Alert feature to select beta users on Android devices. This innovative feature aims to enhance user security by warning individuals of potential scam messages from unknown senders, offering them a layer of protection in their conversations.
Initially announced back in June, WhatsApp's Scam Alert feature has finally reached users participating in the beta program, as revealed by WABetaInfo. Currently available in beta version 2.26.34.1, the feature signals an important step in WhatsApp's ongoing efforts to combat fraudulent activities on the platform.
When a user receives a message flagged by Scam Alert, they are given the option to mark the sender as trusted or to block and report the sender directly. Additionally, if a user chooses to trust the sender, they can contribute to the feature’s improvement by sharing the last five messages from that particular conversation with WhatsApp.
To activate the Scam Alert feature, users must manually enable it through the Settings menu under Account, as it is an optional feature. In a recent blog post, Meta described the Scam Alert as a new, optional feature that runs an on-device machine learning model to alert a user about potential scam messages. They emphasized that no message content leaves the device for classification and no data is auto-reported to WhatsApp or any third party. This ensures that the feature provides a user-focused approach while maintaining the platform's commitment to end-to-end encryption.
