Geely Revolutionizes EV Charging with Innovative 1,000V Architecture

The pursuit of quick and efficient charging has long been the Achilles' heel of electric vehicle (EV) users. Traditional fueling methods provide lightning-fast refuels, yet EV owners have faced a decade of slow charging frustrations. Fortunately, Geely is stepping in to redefine the EV charging experience with their groundbreaking 1,000V architecture.

The catalyst for this innovation was a striking performance demonstration by Geely's sleek Lynk & Co 10 sedan. In an impressive feat captured on video, the sedan accelerated its state of charge from 10% to 80% in just 5 minutes and 32 seconds. It then further pushed the envelope, achieving 97% charge in merely 8 minutes and 42 seconds—far outpacing the competition, which typically experiences a slow trickle-charge phase to protect battery health.

Geely's executives proudly touted that these results stemmed from their advanced 900V architecture. However, delving deeper, it became evident that the Lynk & Co 10's 95 kWh battery pack operates at 772.8 V. Thus, the record-breaking charging performance was achieved via standard 800V hardware. This showcases the exceptional engineering involved, pushing existing technology to its utmost limits.

To permanently breach the 5.5-minute charging barrier and aim for sub-five-minute refueling stops, Geely is now developing a custom 1,000V high-voltage architecture, challenging competitors like BYD, which has been garnering attention for its own rapid charging initiatives. Geely’s approach combines innovative technology with real-world testing, utilizing the Lynk & Co 10 (also known as the Z10) sedan to showcase its capabilities.

The Z10 is a substantial executive sedan, measuring 5,028 mm in length and 2,275 kg in weight. To pack such ultra-fast charging capabilities along with spacious interior comforts at a competitive price point in China—around RMB 215,800 (approximately €27,500)—is a remarkable feat of engineering.

However, robust charging hardware within the vehicle is just one part of the equation. The effectiveness of the charging infrastructure is equally important, and Geely foresaw this challenge. By March 2026, the company had already installed over 2,100 Zeekr-branded charging stations, each boasting an impressive peak power of 1,500 kW—essentially setting the stage for an ambitious future in EV charging.

Currently, no production vehicle can continuously draw 1,500 kW without risking damage, but when the Lynk & Co 10 connected to Geely's Zeekr 1,500 kW super-charger, it achieved a peak charging rate of 1,100 kW. This impressive figure stands in stark contrast to the 430 kW performance observed at BYD charging stations, highlighting the disparities in technology and infrastructure across networks.

The transition to a true 1,000V architecture is pivotal; as electrical power equals voltage times current, climbing to 1,000V allows Geely to harness maximum charging capacity without overloading current levels. This shift will drastically reduce heat generation, facilitating prolonged peak charging without the risk of thermal throttling.

Geely's advancements reinforce its position in an automotive landscape that spans brands like Volvo, Polestar, and Smart. Chairman Li Shufu has cultivated one of the most influential car groups by maintaining a lead in cutting-edge technologies. In contrast to various established manufacturers halting electrification efforts, the competition in China remains fierce and dynamic.

Geely is enhancing every element of the EV experience through integrated electric drives, silicon carbide power controllers, and lithium iron phosphate battery packs designed for repeated high-rate charging. The implications of achieving a reliable 10% to 80% charge in under five minutes are monumental, transforming the EV ownership journey to rival its gasoline predecessors.

While Europe lags behind, struggling to locate high-capacity chargers, China leaps ahead with innovations. The stark contrast in EV charging technology showcases an exciting yet daunting reality of evolving automotive landscapes.
