Geely Set to Introduce Advanced 500 Wh/kg Solid-State Batteries in Vehicles Next Year
In an exciting development for electric vehicle technology, Geely is on the verge of debuting its next-generation solid-state battery, which boasts an impressive energy density of 500 Wh/kg. This innovation is expected to revolutionize the electric vehicle market by offering nearly double the energy density of current lithium-ion batteries.
Geely is currently constructing its first in-house facility dedicated to solid-state battery production, while also collaborating with industry leaders to enhance the capabilities of their new battery technology. Presently, the best lithium-ion battery packs deliver energy densities between 250 and 300 Wh/kg at the cell level; however, this number significantly decreases when the batteries are assembled into packs.
For example, Geely's current Golden Brick LFP battery achieves an energy density of only 128 Wh/kg at the pack level. The advancement to 500 Wh/kg would allow manufacturers the flexibility to create smaller battery systems with equivalent capacity or significantly larger capacities within the same physical space.
This groundbreaking improvement means that automakers could design vehicles that rival diesel-powered options with ranges exceeding 1,000 km on a single charge. Additionally, Geely’s solid-state batteries are promising an impressive lifespan, potentially reaching up to 1 million kilometers.
However, one of the main challenges faced by solid-state batteries is their temperature stability. Typically, these batteries can only function efficiently within a narrow temperature range. Fortunately, Geely’s partnership with Dow Chemical has resulted in a robust adhesive that keeps the battery cells stabilized across a vital temperature spectrum of -40 °C to 120 °C.
Geely plans to initiate its pilot program in 2027, which indicates that we can anticipate these advanced batteries to make their way into selected vehicles as soon as next year. Although mass production will require additional time contingent on testing outcomes, this marks a significant milestone in battery technology for the electric vehicle industry.
